Contracts are an important part of every day life. Contract law can seem scary or unapproachable, but we can work on it. Let's get our feet wet and familiar with contract law. Then we will look at a variety of business related contracts and discuss why they are important.
Client service agreements are also known as general service agreements, scope of work agreements, or statement of work agreements. Sometimes they're known as, "This is my contract for catering." Or, "Here is my contract for photographing your wedding." Whatever you do, you need a client service agreement. Not only will it help establish expectations and scope of work, it will detail how your client must pay you, when they must pay you, and how (if they're able to) cancel or seek a refund. There's not enough room in this description to provide examples that's why we are having an entire class on one type of contract. Please join us and bring a friend who has a business!
What's a sole proprietor, a partnership, an LLC, and a corporation? What the hell is the difference and why does it matter? Am I less of a person if my business is one type of entity over another? (That's for you to determine but I think you're awesome regardless of entity type). Come learn about the different entity types and how they differ.
Your business name and logo are yours! You own them. We protect our cars, houses, children, pets, health, and so on. But what about our intellectual property? Let's talk about trademarks and copyrights-what they are and why they're different. And let's talk about how they get filed. Protecting your brand and your intellectual property are one in the same. The first few sentences of the description sound scary. I promise this is a fun workshop!
Are you going to rent a space in a co-working space, room in an established office, or any type of commercial space? Come learn about space rentals and commercial leases. We will talk about things you should know and things you should avoid. Hopefully we have the space to cover everything? Get it? Come on. Make some room in your heart to laugh at my bad jokes.
Are you a small business owner that is thinking about/or about to hire an employee or independent contractor? Do you want to know the difference? This workshop is for you. Are you an employer who has employees or contractors with no agreements or outdated ones (it's OK we will work on it)? Then, this workshop is for you. Are you a freelancer/gigger/contractor and want to know what your contract means or what to look out for so you're not just signing away? This if for you. O.K. You got me. This workshop is for everyone.
Are you a landlord? Are you a tenant? Come to this workshop. Hopefully you have a written lease longer than this event description.
Nonprofit clients and friends of Rational Unicorn Legal asked me for this seminar. I thought it was a brilliant idea. I'll be doing my research on things like "Games of Chance" (What Oregon calls raffles, auctions, and gambling sometimes). And I'll do research on a variety of other Oregon and Washington fundraising and solicitation rules and regulations. It's a short workshop so specific questions like whether or not you can start a nonprofit just for your dog may require a separate email and research project/Don't get mad when I reply with the famous legal answer, "It depends."
